We need to stop pretending that education has anything to do with learning. It doesn’t matter if a student learns anything as long as they have the piece of paper that says they did the minimum amount of work to earn credit. Learning is a secondary (perhaps even lower than that) goal of education. Just get the paper, just get the credit and hope you don’t have to demonstrate any knowledge. Conversely, it seems like even if you can demonstrate knowledge and ability, if you don’t have the paper you can’t possibly know how to do something. In education, we always say that we encourage and value life-long learning but apparently it doesn’t count if it’s self-directed and doesn’t come with a certificate of some kind. It seems to me that learning used to be the primary goal, but #Igotnuthin.
